Health And Safety Policy
Health and Safety Policy for Gardeners Fulwell
Gardeners Fulwell is committed to providing gardening and grounds maintenance services in a manner that safeguards the health, safety and welfare of our employees, contractors, clients and members of the public. This Health and Safety policy sets out our approach to managing risks associated with gardening, landscaping, and related outdoor work, and forms an integral part of how we plan and deliver our services.
Policy Statement and Objectives
The objective of this policy is to prevent injury, ill health, and damage to property or the environment arising from our activities. We aim to:
Identify and control health and safety risks associated with gardening and grounds work.
Provide safe systems of work, tools, equipment and machinery.
Ensure employees are trained, competent and adequately supervised.
Promote a positive safety culture in every location where we operate.
Continuously improve our health and safety performance through regular review.
Roles and Responsibilities
Overall responsibility for health and safety within Gardeners Fulwell rests with the company management. Management is responsible for ensuring that suitable arrangements, resources and procedures are in place to implement this policy.
Supervisors are responsible for day to day implementation of safe working practices on site. They must communicate relevant safety information, check that staff follow agreed procedures, and stop any work that presents an unacceptable risk.
Employees are responsible for taking reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. This includes following training and instructions, using equipment correctly, wearing required personal protective equipment, and reporting hazards, incidents or near misses promptly.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
Gardeners Fulwell conducts risk assessments for all significant tasks, including mowing, hedge cutting, tree work, planting, use of power tools, handling of soils and green waste, and the application of garden products. These assessments consider potential hazards such as sharp tools, machinery, manual handling, noise, vibration, slips, trips, falls, and exposure to weather conditions.
Findings from risk assessments are used to develop safe systems of work. These include clear instructions for preparing the work area, safe operation of equipment, exclusion of the public from hazardous zones, and safe shutdown and storage of machinery at the end of each job. Risk assessments are reviewed regularly and whenever there is a change in equipment, process, or working environment.
Training, Information and Supervision
All staff receive appropriate induction training on our health and safety procedures and specific training for the tools and machinery they use. Where required, staff must hold relevant qualifications or certificates for particular activities, such as the use of chainsaws or the application of certain garden products.
Information about site specific risks is provided before work begins. Less experienced staff are supervised until they can demonstrate competence. Ongoing refresher training is provided when new equipment is introduced, guidance changes, or when performance monitoring identifies a need.
Equipment, Machinery and Maintenance
Gardeners Fulwell provides tools and machinery that are suitable for the intended tasks and maintained in a safe condition. All equipment is inspected regularly and serviced in line with manufacturer recommendations. Defective tools or machinery are taken out of use immediately until repaired or replaced.
Employees must only use equipment for which they have been trained and authorised, and must follow manufacturer instructions and company procedures at all times.
Personal Protective Equipment
Personal protective equipment is supplied where risks cannot be adequately controlled by other means. This may include safety footwear, gloves, eye protection, hearing protection, high visibility clothing, and weather appropriate clothing for outdoor work.
Employees are required to wear the protective equipment provided when specified and to take reasonable care of it. Any loss or damage must be reported so that replacements or repairs can be arranged.
Hazardous Substances and Environmental Protection
Where gardening work involves the use of garden chemicals or other hazardous substances, Gardeners Fulwell undertakes assessments to ensure these are stored, handled, and applied safely and in accordance with relevant guidance. We seek to minimise the use of hazardous products where possible and adopt environmentally responsible methods of gardening and waste management.
All green waste and other materials generated by our work are handled and disposed of responsibly, with attention to both safety and environmental impact.
Manual Handling and Ergonomics
Many gardening tasks involve lifting, carrying, and repetitive movements. Gardeners Fulwell seeks to reduce manual handling risks by using appropriate equipment, planning work to avoid unnecessary lifting, and breaking heavier loads into manageable sizes.
Employees receive guidance on safe lifting techniques, good posture, and the importance of taking short breaks to avoid strain when carrying out repetitive tasks such as digging, raking or pruning.
Weather, Outdoor Conditions and Public Safety
As an outdoor service provider, Gardeners Fulwell assesses weather and site conditions before and during work. In extreme weather or when conditions create unacceptable risk, work may be postponed or modified.
We take care to protect members of the public by setting up clear work areas, using signs or barriers when required, and storing tools and materials safely. Staff are instructed to maintain tidy workspaces and to keep access routes, pavements and driveways clear of trip hazards.
Accidents, Incidents and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, injuries, near misses and dangerous occurrences must be reported as soon as possible. Gardeners Fulwell keeps appropriate records of incidents, investigates causes, and implements corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
First aid arrangements are made appropriate to the nature of our work, and staff are informed of emergency procedures. Where work is carried out at client premises, we cooperate with any existing emergency arrangements on site.
Consultation and Continuous Improvement
Gardeners Fulwell values feedback from employees and clients as part of our commitment to continuous improvement in health and safety. Staff are encouraged to raise concerns and suggest improvements without hesitation.
This Health and Safety policy is reviewed regularly and updated when necessary to reflect changes in our operations, industry practice, or legal requirements, ensuring that it remains effective and relevant to all gardening services we provide.
